General information

Strawberry - Shelf - a variety that will not fail

Strawberry "Shelf", or Fragaria Polka, belongs to the varieties of foreign selection of the average ripening period. The variety of garden strawberries “Polka” was obtained as a result of selection work, when crossing the variety “Unduka” with the variety “Sivetta”. The variety description characterizes Fragaria Polka as a very promising and moderately productive decent variety for growing in home gardening.

Description and characteristics of the variety

Strawberry bushes of the “Shelf” variety of medium height, of a compact type, with dense foliage and high learning ability. Berries Fragaria Polka smooth, dark red color, very tasty, with caramel, sweet and fragrant pulp. The surface of the berry is attractive, with glitter. The average weight of the berries is at least 12−20 g The variety belongs to the category of average yielding. In terms of proper maintenance and compliance with the growing mode, the average yield is about 1.10–1.35 kg per square meter of berry planting.

Garden strawberries of this variety grow quite well on any soils, but yield indicators are directly dependent on the level of soil fertility. The best result is observed when cultivating Fragaria Polka on light and medium-mechanical soil composition with a pH of acidity of 5.0–6.5.

In the process of preparing the ridges for the berry crop, 5.6 kg of organic matter and 40 g / m² of mineral fertilizers should be added. After a deep digging and removal of weeds on the site, the soil should settle well by the time of planting. Seedlings should be planted in a well-prepared and nutrient-rich soil in spring. The most vulnerable is the root system of berry plantations Fragaria Polka. Therefore, at the stage of active growing season, plants need regular watering and feeding with mineral substances.

Features feeding and watering

At the phase of growth and mass fruiting of the garden strawberry cultivar “Shelf”, regular irrigation measures, fertilizing with fertilizers and treatments against pests and diseases are necessary. When growing Fragaria Polka, special attention should be paid to irrigation and fertilization:

  • modern, productive mid-season variety of Dutch breeding in the spring period needs a fractional application of nitrogen-containing fertilizers,
  • can be used for the first feeding complex mineral fertilizers in the form of nitroammofoski at the rate of 1 tbsp. l on a bucket of water or a mullein infusion diluted with water in a ratio of 1:10,
  • at the stage of budding and ripening berries, strawberry bushes require an increased amount of potassium, therefore, for feeding, it is recommended to use potassium nitrate, wood ash or infusion of chicken manure, diluted 1:12 with water,

Variety description

It is difficult to track the variety of strawberry varieties, as new products every year becomes more and more. Gardeners, farmers, gardeners all the time trying to choose a variety that combines good gastronomic qualities and yields.

So far, the Regiment responds to most requests that are made to strawberries grown in gardens. In view of this, attention from the farmers and garden owners deserves.

Characteristics of the bushes

For the shelves peculiar bushes are average in height. As a rule, shoots do not rise above the mark of 10-12 cm.

In the case of the organization of excellent care and proper planting, the bushes grow nehilyh. On them grow bright green, with medium wrinkled sheets. You can often see leaves of 4-5 blades. Peduncles are formed in one level with foliage, however, with the increase in the size of the berries, they slightly lean towards the ground.

Shelf varieties typically have a fine mustache pattern. Many whiskers and rosettes are formed on the shoots, because of this, this variety breeds without difficulties and quickly. But at high temperatures, the number of outlets slightly decreases.

Variety gives large berries. Fruits form a bright red hue, with a relatively brownish tone. They have a beautiful glossy skin.

The berries are shaped like a cone with a slightly blunt end. In cross section, they are painted in a dull red color, there are no voids and cavities. 1st berries reach 60 g (on average, 30-40 gr.).

In the last harvest berries have a mass of about 20 grams. For this variety peculiar ripening is peculiar. Berries ripen from sepals. The strawberries are very tasty: it is sweetish with a light caramel “train” and a hint of sourness, which is appropriate for the wave.

Productivity “Shelves” is high (2 kg. From a bush). Winter hardiness in fruits is average, however, it tolerates drought well.

Variety stoically tolerates gray rot, but copes worse with root diseases. The berries have excellent transportability: they are rather dense, they do not flow and do not emit juice during transportation.

Garden polka has mostly positive reviews. When compared with other species, there are many advantages:

  • frost resistance (in the conditions of severe winter survives under shelter),
  • unpretentious when growing,
  • suitable for processing in the food industry,
  • almost not prone to disease, but prevention is needed,
  • fructifies well the first two years.

There are almost no cons, to some extent it is unethical to emphasize them. But I would like to emphasize the small "production costs":

  • berries of the last harvest are smaller than the first two times,
  • you need to periodically update the landing, which is very uncomfortable,
  • The shelf endures heat and drought, but the berries grow small,
  • Bushes over the summer intensively grow,
  • The marshy, acidic, saline soils are unsuitable for it,
  • The shelf does not always take root in the northern latitudes of Russia (Vologda, Leningrad regions, etc.)

Seed propagation

If you have plans to get a good harvest of strawberries, it’s best to sow the seeds in this case.

Seed Breeding Benefits:

  • bushes grow healthy, not sick.
  • strawberry grows with excellent yield
  • berries are large and it is to your taste

Planting strawberry mustache

Practically any adult bush lets a mustache during the growing season. They can grow into the ground, and it will take a long time to bring the beds into a normal form.

These same whiskers are used for breeding strawberries "Shelf". For this purpose, fit a mustache with a strong outlet.

Maternal plant should be without pathologiesotherwise the procedure will be meaningless. The socket is isolated from the main bush and planted separately. There he grows independently. For planting the antennae, a substrate of simple garden soil with an admixture of peat or sand is suitable. Also add humus.

Other ways

There is also a method of dividing an adult bush. There is a risk that the escape will not take root in a new place.

The adaptation period is long. Often, a new bush bears fruit not in the 1st year, but only in subsequent seasons.

To do this, take a plant adult - over 3 years. Too young individuals do not survive. For optimal adaptation, we recommend substrate - humus, garden soil and sand. The proportion of 2: 2: 1. It is necessary to take note that the shelf over the years grows.

Care of the variety includes standard procedures, such as watering, mulching, fertilizing and disease prevention.

Shelf must be abundantly watered. It is recommended to start irrigation measures in April, watering approximately 3-4 times in 30 days, and in August-September, the number of irrigations decreases by 2 times.

A good alternative to regular watering is drip. Such an irrigation system gives the potential to deliver water by dose to the root, without allowing waterlogging or drying out of the soil.

Applying drip irrigation, only the area near the roots is moistened, which makes it possible to stop the growth of weeds in the adjacent areas. It is necessary to water with warm water in the evening or in the morning.

By tradition, transplanting plants is carried out in August-September and it begins with the cleaning of the planting area from weeds and debris.

If the shelf grows in a greenhouse, then this procedure can be carried out in winter.

Priority is given to transplantation in the autumn. Autumn is not so hot, high humidity, rain, which is well reflected in the survival rate and rooting.

The place for transplantation should be with a low level of ground water. The possibility of heat buildup should also be excluded.

The bush is dug (the roots should be on the roots) and transplanted into a hole dug in advance. The area should be:

  • protected from the winds,
  • without stagnation of cold air masses,
  • with a slope of 2-3 °,

Today's crop of medium ripeness during the period of spring needs to be applied with parts of fertilizers with nitrogen,

  1. For the 1st feeding you can use: nitroammofoski (1 tablespoon per bucket of water), which is diluted with water in the ratio of 1:10,
  2. In the stage of budding and fruit ripening, we recommend: potassium nitrate, wood ash, chicken manure infusion (aqueous solution 1:12).

Shelf belongs to varieties with good resistance to common diseases.

The characteristic of the variety states that the plant is almost not damaged by powdery mildew and gray mold.

However, a significant drawback of the shelves is poor resistance to root disease and verticillus disease.

Characteristic berries

The berries are medium in size, cone-shaped with a wide base, shiny, rich dark red.

The flesh is red, much lighter in the center. Very fragrant and tasty. It has an original flavor. Sweet even unripe. Can be grown in partial shade. There she will be as sweet.

The average weight of berries - from 20 to 60 g.

Universal purpose has a strawberry shelf. Reviews show that berries can be eaten fresh, make jam and compote, freeze.

Since the yield of strawberry shelf is high (up to two kilograms from a bush), it can be used for industrial cultivation.

Care features

Sometimes the Strawberry Shelf freezes over in severe frosts. Description of the variety says about the features of care for him. If in winter the temperature has greatly decreased, but there is no snow, then it must be protected from freezing. It grows well in a greenhouse. For normal development, the plant needs a long dormant period in winter with a sufficiently low temperature.

Strawberry Shelf needs regular watering.

Soil preparation

Where is the best growing strawberry shelf? The description of the variety indicates that it is prone to root disease. Therefore, it must be protected from the influence of stagnant waters. For this you need to land on sandy soils. And if you only have loam, then give up this delicious variety?

For such cases, invented a method of growing strawberries on specially formed beds. They improve the heating of the site, airing and outflow of excess water. And to speed up the ripening and ease of care, they are increasingly using black agrofiber.

Beds form before planting seedlings. The width is determined by the agrofibre bought in advance. We take into account that it will need to be fixed on the garden bed.

Land for planting strawberries should be free of lumps and roots. Then the film will be closer to her.

The beds are leveled and slightly compacted so that the land does not subside. Good moisturize. If possible, install drip irrigation and watered with it.

Cover the beds with agrofibre, sprinkled the edges with earth.

Shrubs should be placed at a distance of 25 cm in a row and 70 cm left between the rows. Determine the distance between rows and plants in the same row, marking with chalk the landing site.

Cut a hole with a sharp knife. The length of each notch is about 10 cm.

It is better to transplant strawberries in autumn, at the end of August and September. But often they do it in spring. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. In the fall, seedlings are usually better rooted. But sometimes at this time there is such a strong heat that it dries out.

The same can happen in the spring. Therefore, each gardener chooses the terms that suit him more.

Place the seedlings in the holes made, first wrapping the fiber out, and after planting tucked back. When planting, observe the position of the growing point. It should not be covered with earth. But the roots on the surface can not be left. Carefully flatten them in the fossa. Then pour heavily.

If you get a weak seedlings, then before planting you need to remove large leaves, leaving a couple of young. The ends of the roots cut and process biostimulant.

Here also the strawberry Shelf got accustomed. Description of the variety suggests that her mustache is secondary. This means that care for her is not difficult. In the first year you do not need mustaches, so remove them periodically. Agrofibre will not miss the weeds, except that some of them will climb through the hole near the root. Regular watering will ensure a high yield for the next year.

Cultivation, care and reproduction

For the cultivation of strawberries need to find a bright place with direct sunlight. Seedlings are planted on previously prepared beds with loose nutrient soil. It is advisable to put a bit of rotted manure or compost into each well. Garden strawberry Shelf does not impose any special requirements on the soil composition, but responds well to top dressing.

The variety has a moderate winter hardiness and good drought resistance. However, in snowless winters, shelter is necessary. To protect plants from severe frosts, you can use sawdust or special covering material. During the period of active flowering, it is necessary to water the plants abundantly (once a week), feed and regularly loosen the soil.

In summer, the soil may dry up in the sun, so it is necessary to loosen the ground for the roots of the plant to breathe.

The breeding of this variety is carried out by rooting a mustache and replanting young rosettes. Bushes form a large number of whiskers, which makes this method of reproduction the main one. When growing strawberries in greenhouses, transplantation of plants is carried out in winter, and in open ground, seedlings are planted in spring or autumn, like other types of strawberry.

Seeds can be used for reproduction, but this method of cultivation is laborious and requires certain skills.

Diseases and pests

Shelf belongs to varieties with good resistance to common diseases. The characteristic of the variety states that the plants are practically not damaged by powdery mildew and gray rot. However, a significant drawback of the shelves is poor resistance to root disease and verticillus disease.

The roots of the strawberry variety Shelf may be subject to certain diseases.

The variety is not susceptible to pests and is practically not damaged by a tick, but it is still recommended to carry out preventive treatments once a month.

Shelf Strawberry is hard to call a new variety. With the observance of the rules of agricultural engineering and even minimal maintenance, a stable yield will be ensured. You can get a large number of marketable berries with good taste, but you should not expect outstanding results from it.

The origin, description and characteristics of the variety

The original name of the strawberry Shelf - Fragaria Polka. The variety was bred by Dutch breeders in 1977, crossing the varieties Unduka and Sivetta.

It is readily grown in small and medium production, in open ground and in greenhouse conditions.

Polka bushes are formed by strong shoots and large leaves. These are vigorous plants with a developed root system that can reach a height of half a meter.

Berries Shelves at the beginning of fruiting weigh up to 50 grams, the subsequent fruits are half the size. The shape of the berries resembles a blunt shortened cone with a scarlet glossy surface.

According to the description, the pulp has a dense texture of uneven red color. The skin is thin, but durable - does not stain hands when touched.

Berries Shelves have a pleasant aroma and sweet taste with caramel notes. The fruit stem is separated from the fruit with effort.

Bushes produce many antennae, so they need to be trimmed in time to prevent depletion of planting and loss of part of the crop.

Polka high bushes, berries weigh up to 50 grams, have a sweet taste with caramel notes

The shape and color of the berries does not suffer from heat treatment.. Therefore, jams and compotes are distinguished by a rich burgundy color. When drying fruits, the taste is not only preserved, but becomes more pronounced.

Strawberry Agronomy

Strawberry Polk can not be called demanding, but to obtain high-quality harvest is required to comply with certain rules of agricultural technology.

It must be remembered that this variety should be provided with shelter in the snowless winters, and also to protect the root system, which is most vulnerable to diseases.

Features of planting and care

Under the landing of strawberries Shelf need to highlight a well-lit area. Preparation of beds includes digging and removal of weeds, as well as enrichment of the soil with minerals, manure or humus.

Care process for strawberries includes the observance of simple techniques:

  1. Soil should have a weak acid reaction.
  2. Plants should be planted from August to September.
  3. The interval between the bushes should be at least 40 cm.
  4. The first feeding should be carried out in the spring.
  5. During the fruiting period strawberries should be fed with potash fertilizers, chicken manure or wood ash.
  6. Watering strawberries begin in April. Events are held every week until autumn. In the autumn, watering should be halved. For watering is better to use the drip system.
  7. It is desirable to carry out irrigation procedures in the evening and use warm water.

When digging the area should be made 6-7 kg of manure and 50 grams of mineral fertilizer per square meter. Preparation of beds should be carried out 2 weeks before planting.

The shelf can be planted in springtime, but the first fruiting will come no earlier than a year later.

After harvest Plantations should be cleaned from damaged and diseased leaves, treated from parasites and diseases, and organic and mineral fertilizers should be applied.

In snowless winters, the shelf should be covered with sawdust, spruce or special material.

To obtain an earlier harvest for the winter film tunnels are constructed. This method accelerates the ripening of berries for 2-3 weeks.

Transplanting strawberries Shelf should be carried out in spring or autumn. And when grown in greenhouses, the procedure can be carried out in the winter.

Planting strawberries in spring:

  • in the autumn, berry plantings must be supplemented with complex mineral fertilizers or organic matter in the form of a solution based on 2 tbsp. l nitroammofoski and 1 cup of wood ash added to a bucket of water,
  • any fertilizing and fertilizing must be accompanied by abundant irrigation measures, which allows nutrients to digest as quickly as possible and in full,
  • irrigation measures should be started in mid-spring, watering about three to four times a month, and in August and September, the number of waterings should be reduced by half,
  • It is optimal to use drip irrigation, since such an irrigation system allows metered water to reach the root system, preventing overdrying or over-wetting of the soil,
  • watering is done with warm water in the evening, after sunset, or in the morning.

Watering is certainly combined with loosening the soil, since oxygen must be supplied to the root system of the berry crop. High-quality and regular loosening improves the feed to the roots and improves the yield of Fragaria Polka.

Preparing for the winter

Strawberry "Shelf" for the winter can build a fairly healthy leaf machine, which will serve as a natural protection for the kidneys in extreme cold. Of course, the best protection of berry plantations from frost is the snow mass, which is an excellent heat insulator that protects the ground from strong and deep freezing. However, in the conditions of a snowless or snow-free winter, it is advisable to use a strawberry shelter on the plot.

Agrotechnics of growing and caring for strawberries

Strawberry "Shelf" is rightly considered picky in growing, but to get a truly rich and high-quality crop, you must take into account some important nuances of caring for the variety.

Propagate "Shelf" in three ways: with the help of purchased seedlings, separated whiskers, or planting seed (seedlings).

In our case, it is better to refer to the latter, since step-by-step cultivation from seeds always gives a better result:

  • bushes grow much healthier, with good disease resistance,
  • productivity indicators increase,
  • fruits are much larger and tastier.

Selection of seedlings

Every experienced gardener knows that at least 50% of success depends on the correct choice of quality seedlings:

  • planting material should always be bought in specialized stores, where you can get a free consultation of the seller and carefully consider the goods,
  • The package with the material must be intact, with a specified expiration date.

Important! The fresher the seeds, the higher they will germinate, so you should not take those that will soon expire.

Seeds for planting can be prepared independently, the main thing is to carry out this process in accordance with special instructions:

  • take a ripe, washed berry and cut off the top of it,
  • gently peel off the top of the skin with the seeds and lay it on a thick, clean cloth or paper sheet,
  • put to dry in a warm, dry place for 2-3 days,
  • after the expiration date, rub the dried material in the palms to extract the seeds,
  • put the seedlings in a bag (preferably cloth) for further storage.

You should also remember about pre-treatment of seedlings before sowing, which includes:

  1. Soak the seeds. For the manipulation of suitable effective drugs "NV-101" or "Zircon".
  2. Stratification. The easiest option is to lay out the seedlings on wetted cotton pads, cover them with the same discs on the top and put them on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator for 3 days.

Conditions of detention

For germination of prepared seedlings, most often choose special garden transparent containers, which are initially filled with decontaminated using 1% potassium permanganate, then tightly tamped and richly moistened.

Grains are laid out on the soil surface with tweezers with a distance of 2 cm from each other. Then the container is covered on top with a lid with several holes (for ventilation) and is retracted in a warm place, well protected from the destructive direct sunlight.

The best option would be the placement of containers with seedlings on the western or eastern windowsill.

Important!Strawberries do not tolerate picking badly, so the best option for sowing them will be spacious containers, of which you will not need additional transplanting into individual containers in the future.

Soil and fertilizer

It is possible to use for purchase of seeds both the purchased, and independently made soil mix.

For the first option you need the following ingredients:

  • lowland peat - ¼,
  • river sand - ¼,
  • sod land - 2/4.

The second option is a homemade substrate:

In this case, the soil should be normal or slightly acidic, with a permissible pH of not lower than 5.5. Fertilizers are not required at this stage of planting.

Watering and moisture

At first, the necessary microclimate is formed inside the container, therefore it is undesirable to open the container's lid. As a rule, seeds do not need watering; they have enough condensate to drain from the surface of the cover.

Learn how to water strawberries when planting to get a bountiful harvest, how often to water strawberries.

After emergence of shoots, the tank must be ventilated daily and ensure that the soil in it is not dry. In the case of dried land, sprouts should be moistened with separated water, watering them at the root with a special medical syringe.

In the future, hydration should be done once a week, in the morning or evening.

Relation to temperature

To obtain abundant friendly shoots, closed containers with seeds should be kept in a very warm room, with air temperature from +25 to +27 degrees. After the development of seedlings and the removal of the cover, plants can develop at a slightly lower temperature (+20 degrees).

And already before the landing in the ground, about a day, the containers should be determined in a relatively cool room, with an air temperature of about +15 degrees.

Reproduction and planting

In order for strawberry seedlings to grow well, to grow strong, to grow to the right size and to be ready for planting in open ground, at least two months must pass from the time of sowing.

With regard to the “Shelf”, transplantation must be carried out during a period of gradual heat recession - in the third decade of August or in early September, then the bushes will be able to quickly take root in a new place and will have time to get stronger by the winter cold.

Learn about the features of planting strawberries in the fall and spring.

Recommendations for landing and care:

  • the soil in which the seedlings will be placed should be slightly acidic, as well as pre-fertilized organic matter (at the rate of 5 kg of manure per square meter),
  • the distance between the seedlings should be at least 35 cm, and between the rows - 50 cm, since a tight fit negatively affects their comfort and normal growth,
  • strawberries do not need any additional support - the bushes will root in the ground with a well-developed root system, and a strong stalk with numerous leaves will form on the surface,
  • the first time the feeding procedure is carried out in the spring. Fertilizer consists of a mineral additive or a solution of mullein. During the budding stage, the plant should be fertilized with potassium nitrate, chicken droppings or wood ash,
  • Watering should be carried out by drip irrigation weekly, starting in mid-April and ending in early August. For humidification, it is desirable to use water at room temperature.

Important! Before the onset of the first cold weather, the gardener needs to think about sheltering the “Shelves” for the winter. Before frosts, strawberries can protect themselves with existing bulky leaves, after - protection will depend on the amount of precipitation. With heavy snowfall, the plants will hide themselves with a large layer of snow, which will provide them with perfect thermal insulation. When dry, windy weather without precipitation, coniferous pine branches, straw and dry leaves will be a good option for shelter.

As noted above, in addition to growing out of seeds, strawberries of the “Shelf” variety can be propagated with the help of whiskers (bush shoots on which rosettes of leaves have formed).

In order to obtain a suitable planting material, the gardener should select a mustache with a strong rosette in July, choosing the most healthy maternal plant without any pathologies. Next, the outlet must be separated from the main bush and landed separately in prepared containers with a substrate consisting of garden soil, sand, peat and humus.

When the first roots appear on the planted mustache, they should be sprinkled with damp earth. On hot days, watering material is carried out 2-3 times a week. If the weather is rainy, in order to avoid compaction, the soil should be well plowed. Already 2.5 months after the beginning of growth, the rooted mustache will give the first harvest.

Growing difficulties and recommendations

In addition to the basic rules for planting "Shelves" in open ground, a novice gardener should refer to additional recommendations in order to avoid some of the difficulties associated with the varietal characteristics of the plant in the future:

  1. Pruning overgrown leaves and whiskers from shrubs. A timely procedure will allow not only to protect the plants from the attacks of pests, but also to provide them with a more comfortable wintering. Trimming should be done in the morning or in the evening, using a sharp shear for manipulation.
  2. Autumn mulching of the soil protects the flower stalks from contact with the ground, and also provides shelter for the root system in the cold. As organic mulch, humus, straw, compost or manure can be used, and inorganic mulch, stone, plastic film or mulch paper, which does not rot and does not contain harmful coloring components, may be suitable.

Pests, diseases and prevention

Unfortunately, the “Shelf” variety is not distinguished by its ideal immunity to various diseases and attacks of pests, therefore it also needs timely prevention and, in some cases, treatment.

The most common diseases "Shelves":

  • fusarium and late blight - an incurable fungal disease that manifests itself as brown spots on the leaves and petioles, with the edges of the leaf plates bending upward,

  • gray rot characterized by a fluffy bloom on the manifestation of brown spots on the fruits of the plant. It occurs mainly due to frequent rains and quickly jumps to the neighboring berries. The disease is considered incurable, after the discovery of the first signs of the plant should be destroyed,

  • white or brown spot - fungal disease, multiplying spores. The leaves appear white or brown spots, which gradually merge, covering the entire surface. As a result, the leaf turns yellow and dies,

  • powdery mildew - A disease in which the leaves turn purple and curl into tubes, also white plaque appears on their surface. The fruits of diseased strawberries become deformed and are also covered with bloom.

Among the pests of plants that are very fond of attacking strawberry plantings are noticeable: nematode, weevil, shaggy bronze, strawberry and spider mite, plant louse, bear, slugs and tobacco trips.

Preventive and therapeutic measures:

  • timely transfer of strawberries to a new place (at least every four years),
  • before planting, root growth treatment with a growth stimulator, as well as soil treatment with iodine solution,
  • soil mulching
  • before the beginning of flowering, processing berries Bordeaux liquid (2-3%),
  • timely trimming of bushes from excess whiskers and shoots,
  • if a variety is damaged, pests of strawberries can be sprayed with a solution of dry mustard, infusion of wood ash, a mixture of wormwood and tobacco, as well as garlic solution.

Did you know?Strawberry is the only berry in the world, the seeds of which are located outside, not inside. They provide the human body with cleansing of slags with insoluble fibers.

The variety "Shelf" is not the first and even more so the best among many other modern varieties. However, gardeners do not cease to plant unpretentious strawberries annually in their plots, hoping to get large fruits from the plant with excellent caramel flavor.
