General information

Hungarian white geese

Photos, descriptions, characteristics of the breed for home breeding.

The Hungarian breed of geese got the same name as the place of origin. In our area geese were imported from Hungary in the late 19th century. In order to create a breed with good quality properties, the Pomeranian and Emden birds already common at that time were crossed. When the attempt was crowned with success, they began to select the best representatives for further reproduction.

Breed of medium size, small body. The back is flat, wide, the neck is thick. The limbs are short, strong red color, the same as the beak. The color of the Hungarian geese is light. Chest deep, comes forward. In adulthood, the gander can grow up to 7 kg, and the geese can reach 6 kg for abundant feeding conditions. For a year, young geese carry up to 45 eggs per year, from which up to 70% of their young hatch. Hungarian geese are a precocious breed. Newborn goslings are rapidly gaining weight, and up to 2 months of age reach a mass in excess of 4 kg, and in another half month gain another 0.6 kg.

In the geese of the Hungarian breed all the positive qualities are combined. Hungarian goose quickly gains weight and you can get high-quality meat, if you feed the birds with special feed, you can get high-quality and large liver (up to 450 g). Also used for further finishing fluff, which is very soft and light. The largest amount of fluff is placed on the head - 35%. Hungarian hybrids have an even greater weight and a huge liver, the mass of which can reach 600 g. Such impressive dimensions are achieved due to the mixing of the blood of Landa and Hungarian geese.

in our area the average annual number of eggs is 35 - 40 pieces, with a mass of 145-150 g each. The fertility rate is high and becomes about 90%, the amount of hatching of young stock is also high, more than 70%. In our time, the largest number of Hungarian geese recorded at a poultry farm in Bashkiria.

External differences "Hungarians" are:

  • coloring the plumage is mostly white, less often gray or spotty,
  • trunk - firmly knit, with wide breasts and back, in females the belly is more pronounced,
  • at the geese neck short, in gusakov it is longer and thicker
  • head - medium sized, with an orange beak,
  • legs - short, powerful, orange colored,
  • wings - short, muscular.

Puberty and egg production

In females, puberty usually occurs at 9 months of age or slightly earlier. They have a rather modest egg production rate: about 40-45 eggs per season, the average egg weight is 140 grams, but geese often carry larger eggs. The fertilization of eggs can reach 90%, but usually this indicator is somewhat lower.

Feather and down

Hungarian goose can serve as a source of quality feather and fluff. Some individuals are carriers of the frizzling gene, due to which they have a particularly soft, curly feather. One individual plucked 3-4 times a year and get with it for this period an average of 115 grams of raw materials.

Hungarian geese are also famous for their large liver, which is distinguished by its high taste. With a special mode of feeding, as will be discussed in more detail below, the mass of this delicacy product reaches 450 grams.

Hatching instinct

This instinct in females of Hungarian geese is fully developed. The survival rate of chicks on average is 70%. As a rule, nowadays, poultry farmers prefer to use incubators for breeding goslings - this method is much more practical than natural incubation.

Requirements for the room

Almost all day, geese spend on the run, during the day in the house they are mostly in the winter, during the frost. Nevertheless, they require certain conditions in the house, namely:

  • the room should be insulated and protected from drafts, although the geese feel good at the zero temperature inside the house,
  • there must be effective ventilation, dampness is bad for the condition of the bird,
  • in winter, when the light day is short, it is necessary to use artificial lighting,
  • sawdust, straw or peat are used as litter, and peat is the best option,
  • the litter must remain dry - this is very important
  • it is necessary to provide ash baths for bathing the bird in a mixture of sand and ash (bathing in such baths, the bird cleans itself from parasites), as well as a feeding trough and a drinker.

Walking and water treatments

For the Hungarian geese must be provided for walking, in the fresh air, this active bird spends almost all day. It is recommended to exclude walking in the marshland, as well as in areas overgrown with weeds - there are herbs that are harmful to geese.

The ideal option is grazing herds on the shore of the reservoir. In general, the presence of a reservoir has a very positive effect on the productivity of this breed. You can organize a mini-reservoir in the courtyard, but the water in it should be periodically replaced with fresh.

What to feed

The basis of the diet of adult geese are succulent herbs. If geese are grown for the sake of a delicious liver, then their diet is different from the standard one. In addition, the composition of the feed goslings also has its own characteristics.

On the first day of life, goslings are given a boiled, crumbled egg. Crushed grain is added to it (it is best to use corn or millet). Feed the chicks about every two hours. In the following days, the egg is replaced with low-fat cottage cheese, wheat bran and chopped root vegetables, such as carrots or beets, are introduced into the feed.

From 3-5 days, crushed juicy greens are introduced into the diet, it can be clover, dandelion, nettle. Mineral additives use chalk and meat and bone meal in small quantities (no more than 3% by weight of the feed).

From two weeks of age, the approximate composition of the goose ration looks like this:

  • chopped fresh greens - 50% of the total mass of the feed mixture,
  • crushed grain - 20%,
  • wheat bran - 10%,
  • crushed peas or lentils - 10%,
  • sunflower or soybean meal - 7%,
  • chalk or shell rock - 2.5%,
  • salt - 0.5%.

Starting from one month of age, the proportion of green fodder in the gooses ration gradually increases and the percentage of grain, meal and bran decreases. If free bird grazing is organized, the cereal mixtures give them only for the night.

For intensive feeding goslings are widely used feed. Before the chicks reach three weeks of age, they use PC starting feeds, then they switch to standard ones.

An adult goose a day absorbs about 500 grams of fresh grass, to which you can add grated roots. The favorite herbs are pislitse, young thistle, dandelion, nettle, sorrel.

The ideal is the option when the bird grazes near a reservoir, in this case, it provides itself with food and water. In the summer, grain mixes or compound feeds are given to geese only in the evening.

In winter, the diet of birds varies somewhat. Green grass is replaced by hay, grass meal, silage, grated root vegetables. Grain mixtures or feed give twice a day - in the morning and in the evening.

When feeding a bird for the sake of a delicious liver, a special feeding procedure is applied. Begin with preparatory feeding of 11 week old geese. With free grazing, they get an increased amount of protein-rich cereal mixtures.

About two weeks later, the force feeding phase begins. Geese are driven into the premises, and keep them in very cramped conditions. Feed the bird with steamed corn, flavored with vegetable oil and salted (no more than 1% salt).

Such feeding lasts about a month, after which the bird is slaughtered.

Advantages and disadvantages

As the undoubted advantages of the Hungarian geese, the following features can be noted:

  • this bird gains weight very quickly, and its meat is of high quality,
  • using a special feeding scheme, a large amount of high-quality goose liver is obtained,
  • Representatives of the Hungarian breed are used as a source of down and feathers, and some of the individuals provide raw materials with the best characteristics.

  • poor moisture tolerance in the house,
  • low egg production rate.
As you can see, with some not so significant shortcomings Hungarian geese are a tempting object for breeding. This is an excellent early ripening meat breed, which, moreover, is distinguished by a large liver and can produce fluff of excellent quality. What is important, the maintenance of the bird is much simpler and cheaper, if there is a possibility of its free grazing in the meadow and there is access to the reservoir.

Hungarian geese: characteristics

Goose weight reaches 7 kg, goose - maximum 6 kg. The level of egg production reaches up to 42 eggs annually weighing up to 155 g. Goslings gain more than 4 kg in 56 days and almost 5 kg in 70 days. Weight is gained quickly due to the most efficient use of feed from pastures.

Hungarian geese have a large fatty liver with proper fattening. Ideally, hybrids from Hungarian geese and Landaander gander are fattened to the liver. The mass of the liver in hybrids can reach up to 600 g, "pure Hungarian" - 450 g.

Also, a decent amount of high-quality feather and fluff (up to 110 g from one plucked bird), as well as goose fat, are obtained from the population.

Features of appearance

This breed is different:

  • wide and massive breasts,
  • wide but compact torso,
  • short necked geese and long crooked goose,
  • medium sized head,
  • massive and short limbs of bright orange color,
  • wide orange beak, without a frontal bump, which darkens a little with age.

The presence of white feather color, allows to confuse the Hungarian geese with classic poultry and swans, having an externally refined body structure.

In what conditions to contain, how and what to feed?

Geese in this category are considered unpretentious, but:

  • birds need perfect care and maintenance
  • must be pasture
  • you need a reservoir in which geese not only swim, but also drink water,
  • need to organize good ventilation, as there is a sensitivity to lack of oxygen,
  • The floor of the goose should be covered with sawdust and straw.

What feed sways, the main volume of feed should be juicy - nettle, yarrow, dandelions, sorrel, ground sow thistle, oxalis, dodder. Dry feed is fed twice a day in winter, and in the summer they are only fed. Also in the feed goes silage and root crops, granulated feed, crushed soybeans, peas, oats and bran.

Due to the length and structure of the intestine, this breed of birds maximally assimilates all feed consumed.

To get the liver, the 11-week-old goslings are fattened freely, and then forcibly, thickening the livestock in the goosebump. Forced fattening use steamed corn with vegetable oil and 1% salt. Fattening lasts 1 month.

Cultivation of the Hungarian geese

Sexually, geese mature at 9 months, ready to hatch eggs. At elevated or lowered temperatures, husks behave passively with respect to mating. Fertility of eggs reaches up to 89%, hatchability ranges from 69-71%, and the survival rate of goslings is within 97%. Well divorced "in itself." Juveniles are growing and quickly gaining weight with grazing.

Breed features

The Hungarian breed is considered universal and belongs to the heavy type, because:

  • already at the age of nine weeks, young birds weigh from 4 to 4.8 kg,
  • adult gander grows up to 6-8 kg,
  • females weigh 5–6 kg.

Hardy, low-maintenance and fast-growing birds of white, gray or spotty color can be easily distinguished by their characteristic appearance:

  • the body of the goose is short and wide,
  • the back is wide, long with a slight slope to the tail,
  • chest rounded
  • the male's strong neck has a slight bend. It is longer and thicker than the short neck of the geese,
  • wings and legs are short and muscular,
  • the bright orange beak of a young goose darkens with age.

Breeding Hungarian geese is interesting for three reasons at once:

  1. The bird gives excellent quality meat.
  2. Hungarian breed is appreciated due to the high taste of the liver, the weight of which after a special fattening reaches 550-600 grams.
  3. Geese have high quality feather and down. The young bird gives up to 330 grams of high quality fluff. When plucking an adult bird, 100–110 g of raw material is obtained, a third consisting also of down. And pluck Hungarian geese can be three or four times a year.

Of particular value when breeding geese on a feather are birds of the Hungarian breed, carriers of the frizzling gene. These individuals have feathers on the hips and tail much softer and longer than usual, which is due to a change in their structure.

Under the influence of the mutation, the feather of a part of the population of birds from Transylvania is divided along the spine into two parts and begins to curl, and such Hungarian geese are especially valued by breeders.

Feeding Hungarian Goose

The diet of geese of the Hungarian breed mainly consists of juicy green fodder. Moreover, their daily amount reaches 2 kg. And geese are sensitive to the quality of the grass. Therefore, it is unacceptable to graze a herd in areas with high weeds or swampy lowlands. Especially loved by geese are dandelions and nettles, dodder and yarrow, sorrel, sorrel and young sow thistles.

On the day the bird should receive at least 400–500 grams of fresh grass, meadow hay, silage or root crops. In addition, geese eat granulated feed and crushed grain, such as oats, peas, soybeans, or bran.

During the summer grazing, the birds feed freely and only feed on ground grain after returning from pasture. In the cold period they are fed twice a day.

If there are geese in the herd, then to get a quality egg, it is important at any time of the year to introduce hay into the diet with the inclusion of nettle or grass meal.

To obtain a gourmet liver, a special technique is used, which provides for preparatory and then forced fattening of the bird.:

  1. The program includes 11-week-old goslings that graze during the day, consuming steamed corn, crushed grain and protein feed, and spend the night in fairly cramped conditions.
  2. After two weeks, those already weighing 6 kg start feeding the bird by force, simultaneously compacting geese in the poultry house to seven heads per square meter. In the diet of the Hungarian goose at this time, purified steamed corn, to which add vegetable oil and 1% salt. The process lasts about a month, after which the bird is ready for slaughter.

Content of Hungarian Geese

At home, the geese of this breed are active, they love to spend time in the water and pasture. Therefore, for summer grazing, which lasts all daylight, it is important to choose a shaded area by the reservoir for bathing the herd.

To protect the bird from parasites living in the plumage, goslings up to three times a month organize bathing in a mixture of sand and ash, to which feed sulfur is added.

For the winter maintenance they prepare light clean, ventilated rooms with tanks provided for bathing. Hungarian geese enter the poultry houses only in frosts. To protect the beaks and paws from frostbite, special attention is paid to dry floors and peat, sawdust or straw bedding. At the same time in the gooseneck temperature may be zero.

The key point for keeping birds with active heat exchange is arranging ventilation in the house and avoiding drafts, otherwise geese can often get sick and suffer from lack of oxygen.

Cultivation of geese of the Hungarian breed

The ability to reproduce in birds of the Hungarian breed is fully manifested at 9 months of age and fades away by three years, when the hussies begin to gradually lose interest in females.

A characteristic feature of geese is a short period of egg-laying. For the year, the goose lays from 40 to 55 eggs at 150–190 grams. If a full-fledged diet is maintained at this time, then the Hungarian geese increase their productivity, and the number of fertilized eggs reaches 89%.

In the process of incubation, three out of ten eggs are rejected, and the rest are healthy goslings.

Losses of an adult livestock during the maintenance are limited to 3% of the herd, which speaks in favor of the breed endurance of the bird.

However, when breeding for meat and liver, the best results are shown not by purebred birds, but obtained by crossing Hungarian geese with Landa geese or individuals of the Leghard breed.

Breed popularity and approximate price in Russia

Hungarian geese were introduced to the Soviet Union in 1989. It was not the best time for the poultry industry, and farmers got acquainted with the qualities of poultry only recently.

Only in 2011 in the State Register did the first breeding farm, which is industrially engaged in the cultivation of the Hungarian breed, and the preservation of its gene pool. This enterprise was the poultry farm "Bashkirskaya", located in the village Avdon, Ufa district.

Today Bashkortostan is the leader in the breeding of Hungarian geese.

Farmers of the Tula region can turn to the Kireev incubator-poultry-farming station for breeding experience. And Gayskaya Poultry Farm of the Orenburg Region will offer both daily goslings and poultry processing products.

В среднем по России молодняк венгерской породы стоит от 190 до 300 рублей, а инкубационное яйцо можно купить по 90–100 рублей.

Today, the Hungarian breed is of increasing interest to the poultry farmers, and not only farming and peasant farms, but also large complexes are eagerly engaged in breeding it. One of them will soon appear in the Kirov region, where in May 2015 a joint venture of Hungary and Russia was set up to grow a million heads of Hungarian breed.

Hungarian geese with photo and description

The geese, originally from Hungary, have a thick white plumage that densely covers the whole body. The bird's beak is powerful, orange-red in color, the head is small. Hungarian geese are compact and well-developed breasts. The pink paws of the birds of this breed are short and muscular.

Farmers want to buy Hungarian geese, as they are growing fast and are gaining weight very well. An adult male weighs about 7 kg, and a gusk weighs 6 kg. Young animals at 3 months of age have a live weight of about 4.5 kg. If you keep the Hungarian geese on the run next to the pond, then according to many breeders, the bird grows even faster. The thing is that geese willingly eat algae and develop a greater appetite on the ground than in captivity.

You can read more about feeding geese in the article: Feed for waterfowl.

Hungarian geese laying eggs lay about 40-45 large eggs per season. The mass of each - 140-150 grams. Males are not very active, so out of 10 eggs only 7 or 8 will be fertilized. Sexual maturity in females occurs at 9 months of age, sometimes a little earlier. However, if the bird is raised for meat, it is better to send the geese for slaughter up to 4 months of age. Hungarian geese meat will be tender and lean.

Hungarian geese have gained incredible popularity, and every breeder wants to buy them. The reason is that at a low cost of maintaining the bird, the farmer makes a big profit. Very often, this breed is grown for the sake of obtaining a fatty liver, which is appreciated by lovers of foie gras - a delicious paste.

If you fatten the Hungarian geese to a fatty liver, then its weight increases several times and one individual gives up to 0.5 kg of a fatty liver, which is very much appreciated in the market. Delicious dishes from the liver of Hungarian geese are recommended to be eaten by all people and children, because it is not only tasty, but also healthy. For example, a goose liver is recommended for a weakened patient and anemia, since it contains a large amount of iron.

According to reviews of poultry farmers, if young goslings are treated with anthelmintic drugs at the age of 1-1.5 months, they will better gain weight. This is especially true of those birds that are grazed on the banks of reservoirs. The necessary medicines can be bought at the pharmacy, but some breeders prefer to give natural preparations to geese, for example, wormwood. Its seeds and stems can be included in the composition of home-made feed.

If there is no reservoir near the farm, then you can independently collect algae and give the geese as food. Such an approach will allow to save money on poultry nutrition. In addition, the Hungarian geese, the description of which is in the article, are rapidly growing on the greenery of water bodies, rarely get sick. Algae are rich in nutrients, minerals and vitamins, which positively affects the health of the bird.

Raising poultry to get a fatty liver needs a more high-calorie diet. For these purposes, grain mixtures and balanced feed are used, which can be purchased in finished form or easily prepared by yourself.

Breed characteristic

Hungarian geese are subspecies of heavy type poultry. Impressive weight of an adult and chicks can even surprise experienced farmers. Birds from 9 weeks of life gain weight up to 4 kg. The mass of an adult male is 8 kg, and its liver is enlarged 2 times more than that of other subspecies. The female is able to gain up to 5 kg.

Hungarian geese quickly feather their wings, their wings are covered with thick feathers, and the sternum - with thick down. The description of the subspecies will help make the final choice in favor of an unusual subspecies of pets:

  • body shape is round and rather short,
  • Hungarian purebred geese are predominantly white noble color,
  • the back of the animal stands out against the general background (the wide sternum and the back help the birds protect themselves from negative environmental factors),
  • a bird with a strong, massive neck moves fast and shows great maneuverability for such a breed,
  • regarding the lower and upper extremities - they are short, massive,
  • in young stock, a beak of bright color is noted, which eventually fades.

The number of adults in the formed flock does not exceed 10-12 birds. The egg of the birds is large, therefore female hens hatch only 5-6 chicks at a time.

The benefits of breeding

Why do we need whimsical Hungarian geese? Initially, the breed was bred for the plumage, which glorifies the Hungarian white geese today. The advantages of birds are important, for which the Hungarian geese remain popular by humans:

  • top quality poultry meat
  • unusual taste of the liver of the animal (weighing up to 0.5 kg),
  • high quality down and feathers, which are used in the manufacture of outerwear, insulation and pillows.

Should I breed such geese? The answer to this question will serve as a photo, which depicts the Hungarian geese. Beautiful weighty breed will not leave anyone indifferent.

Conditions of the maintenance of the Hungarian breeds

Representatives of the breed require special care. Active birds prefer to spend their free time near the pond or pasture. The farmer should equip the corner, which will include a large amount of clean water and shade, necessary for the normal existence of the birds in the warm season. Growing birds involves the timely prevention of birds from parasites. For these purposes, once every few months geese are forced to bathe in a mixture consisting of ash, sulfur and fine-grained sand.

In the winter or cold season, birds of the developed hybrid breed are looking for warmth. The farmer needs to equip well-ventilated, but warm rooms and enclosures. Avoid frostbite of the extremities of the birds will succeed only in cases when a person takes care of the insulated dry flooring on the floor of the structure in which these birds live.

Poultry Feed

In addition to the content, the white Hungarian geese hatched need a special diet. Geese ponderous breed like fresh greens, rich in vitamins and beneficial trace elements. Dry lure is allowed only in the cold season, when it is almost impossible to get fresh food. Hungarian massive geese consume an average of 2 kg of food per day. The favorite dish of the bird is dandelions and yarrow. Improperly compiled diet will jeopardize not only the health of adults, but also the young.

Supplements of root vegetables and some dried herbs are allowed in the diet. Dry feed and feed are served only in a measured amount in advance. During the period when birds suffer from epidemics and viral diseases, the daily ration of birds is diluted with vitamin complexes.

Clean water is a guarantee of the health of the whole farm and good growth of birds of the subspecies of Hungarian geese.

To save on high-quality water troughs and water is an unaffordable luxury for a farmer. It is easy to take care of such a species of bred feathery, if you approach their breeding wisely. Given the characteristics of the life of birds, the farmer receives a new number of poultry each year, as well as high-quality meat, as part of which he can be sure. Breeding a special breed is always interesting and exciting.
