Should I soak cucumber seeds?

Cucumber does not belong to such “heavy” crops. Its seeds germinate very quickly without soaking: at a temperature of about 25 ° C, the first shoots appear already on the second - third day after sowing. Therefore, it is necessary to solve the issue of stimulating the germination of cucumber seeds in each specific case, depending on the planting technology.

It is possible to grow cucumbers by direct sowing of seeds in open ground and through seedlings. Swollen or germinated seeds can be sown only when it is possible to maintain and control temperature and humidity. The emerged shoots are very gentle and the slightest cooling, the drying of the soil or its overwetting threatens them with death. Therefore, when sowing seeds in open ground is not worth the risk. It is better to sow only dry seeds, especially if the ground is still not well warmed.

It is recommended to soak cucumber seeds only when growing plants through seedlings, and then only in the following cases: when old seeds are sown and they are doubtful of their germination or when the seeds are overdried, their germination process may be delayed. When applying for soaking the seeds of a solution of biologically active substances, the soaking process is recommended for all seeds of cucumbers, regardless of their condition or shelf life.

The process of soaking seeds in water (without oxygen)

Before soaking the seeds are heated on a radiator for 2 days. The soaking procedure in its pure form is carried out without oxygen and consists of the following. Seeds are placed in a container and poured water. The volume of water should be 50 - 60 times the volume of seeds. In the process of swelling the seeds must be completely immersed in water. As long as the rind of the seed is not broken, they do not need oxygen. Water temperature does not matter much, usually take water at room temperature. Water quality plays a significant role. Water must be clean and free of salts. Salts inhibit the germination of seeds, so do not use ash and fertilizer extracts when soaking. Structured “living” water (rain or snow melt) acts very beneficially on the seeds. Such water retains its biological activity even when it is briefly brought to the boiling point. But it does not save its properties for long - a few days. In cities to collect snow for melt water is undesirable, because it's too dirty. It is better to prepare such water in the refrigerator. You need to place a container of water in the freezer compartment of the refrigerator. As soon as half of the water freezes, it needs to be drained (there are all impurities in it). And thaw the remaining ice and apply the obtained biologically active structured water to soak the seeds. When soaking the seeds need to mix several times. If cucumber seeds are coated, it is impossible to soak them, since the nutrient shell that envelops them will dissolve in the water.

At seeds of various cultures, the swelling time is different and, accordingly, different soaking times. Cucumber seeds swell in 18 hours. Leave them in the water for a longer time is impossible, because after the seed coat softens, they need oxygen. If the seeds are not removed from the water in time, the germ may die.

The process of soaking the seeds on gauze (with oxygen)

Given the danger of the death of the embryo with a clean soak without oxygen, you can do soaking with oxygen. The technology is different here. A cloth or gauze folded in several layers is placed on the bottom of the plastic tray and the seeds are laid out on its surface. It is preferable to take the fabric, because the sprouts that appear when taking seeds from gauze can break off. Water is poured into the tray so that it reaches the seeds, but does not cover them. For this method, all the recommendations for the preparation of water that were given for soaking without oxygen are valid. A second layer of damp folded cloth is placed on top of the seeds. The tray is covered with a lid so that the moisture does not evaporate. The air in the tray is sufficient for the seeds to germinate. Seeds are in the tray until germination. Instead of plastic trays, you can use glass jars or plastic bags.

Application when soaking biologically active substances

The best result can be obtained if the cucumber seeds are soaked not in pure water, but in a solution of biologically active substances. Those are stimulators Epin, Zircon, humates and aloe juice. When soaked, seeds germinate faster and plant growth is stimulated. The water temperature should be greater than 20 ° C, at lower temperatures, the efficiency decreases. There are many growth stimulants, but these drugs are selected due to the fact that they are all on a plant-based basis.

Epin increases the resistance of plants to adverse factors, they are better tolerate cold and heat, drought and lack of light. To prepare the solution, the Epin test tube is warmed in the hand for a few minutes to dissolve the precipitate, after which 2 drops of this preparation are diluted in 100 ml of water and then seeds are poured over it. Processing are 18 - 20 hours, after which the seeds or put on germination, or planted in the ground.

Humates Available in the form of potassium humate and sodium humate. They are also stimulants and increase plant resistance to stressful situations. For soaking cucumber seeds use a 0.01% solution. First make the mother liquor: 1 g of the drug is dissolved in 100 ml of water. To prepare the working solution, dilute 1 ml of the stock solution into 100 ml of water. The temperature of the solution during soaking should be 27 - 28 ° C, the processing time is 24 hours.

When applied Zircon there is a high activity of seed germination and active root formation in plants. 1 drop of Zircon is dissolved in 150 ml of water, the procedure is 10 to 12 hours.

Beneficial effect on seeds and aloe juice. If this plant is in the apartment, you can not spend money on the purchase of stimulants. For the procedure, cut off the lower large leaves of the plant, which are already more than 2 years old and put them in the refrigerator for a week. This increases the biological activity of the juice. A week later, the leaves are taken out of the refrigerator, crushed them in any way possible and squeeze the juice. If cucumber seeds were stored for up to 3 years, the juice is diluted with water 1: 1 and the resulting solution is used for soaking. If the shelf life of seeds is more than 3 years, apply aloe juice without dilution with water.

After the soaking procedure, the seeds are either grown until sprouts 2–5 mm long appear, or they are immediately sown in a container for seedlings.

Mandatory check on the germination of cucumber seeds, whether to germinate

Before sowing, be sure to check the seeds for germination. It is not known how long the old or low-quality seed has a vital reserve; therefore, it is not possible to wait for sprouts on the soil surface. To save time and money, it is recommended to make testing procedures for seed grains on the ability to germinate. This gives hope that the seedlings will be viable. During the soaking process, attention is paid to important factors:

  • modification of seeds in a wet environment,
  • germination rate,
  • the number of suitable grains from the selected number.

The process looks like this: 10-15 pieces are taken from the total mass of seeds, and then laid out on a cloth moistened with warm water, laid out on a saucer. The top should be covered with plastic film and put the saucer in a warm place, protected from drafts (temperature range from 20 to 23 degrees). Several times a day you need to check the condition of the seeds, so as not to miss when the sprouts begin to bite. It is worth paying attention to the napkin, in case of drying it will be necessary to moisten it again.. To do this, just spray warm water from a spray bottle so as not to disturb the seeds.

Sprouted Cucumber Seeds

How to soak:

  • the procedure is carried out only after disinfection of seeds,
  • the liquid used should be sufficient, there is no danger of full grain immersion,
  • when immersing the seed in the solution should be mixed several times with your hand or spatula,
  • after soaking the seed should be immediately planted in the ground or deposited on germination,
  • processing time depends on the solution used.

Soak in saline for a while

Saline is considered universal, it allows you to determine the germination and show which specimens will sprout and which will not for almost any culture. The working solution is prepared from 6-10 g of common salt and an incomplete glass of warm water. The process itself involves filling the bowl first with seed, then filling the tank with the prepared liquid. After 6-8 minutes, the surfaced seeds are harvested, as they become unsuitable for planting. Those that have lasted all the time at the bottom have a good life potential. This process also makes it possible to disinfect the seed. After that, plant seeds can be safely.

Soak in biologically active preparations for rapid germination

The soaking of seeds in a liquid enriched with biologically active preparations is considered multifunctional. The most famous are:

  • Zircon,
  • Solution of humate potassium or sodium,
  • Iwine
  • Epin-Extra.

The method of treating seed with Zircon provides for the preparation of a working solution from 300 ml of water and 2 drops of the preparation and takes time. Soaking the grain in it lasts for 8-18 hours, during which time the sprouts should roll. The tool acts in areas such as stimulation of germination, strengthening the immune system.

A good result is obtained if you process the material Gumat. When used, a powder (1 gram) and 100 ml of water at room temperature are taken to prepare the mother liquor. Store the tool should be in a cool place (for example, in the refrigerator on the door). Before use, 1 ml of the solution is diluted with 100 ml of water. Seeds are soaked in the resulting liquid for 24 hours.
Ivin has an excellent stimulating and anti-stress effect. For soaking preparing a solution of 2 drops of funds and 2 liters of water at room temperature. Processing time is 18-24 hours. Which drug to choose depends on you.

Soda solutions will help sprout faster

Baking soda is useful not only in the kitchen, but also for garden work. It has an antimicrobial effect, helps to prolong the period of fruiting. For soaking a working solution is prepared from 1 liter of warm water and 1 teaspoon of soda. Defend the seeds in this solution need at least a day.
Disputes over the appropriateness of the use of soda has been going on for more than one year. The only thing that is not in doubt - it is the ability to soften the surface of the grain, allowing moisture to freely penetrate the seed. To enhance the effect, various recipes have been developed, which include the addition of other biostimulants:

  • aloe juice (200 ml of water, 5 ml of aloe juice, 1/4 tsp. of soda),
  • Tsitovita (5 drops of water, 1/5 tsp. Of soda, 350 ml of water).

Soaking in Épinay will allow to sprout seeds of cucumbers faster

The drug Epin has a wide spectrum of action. It is a regulator and adaptogen capable of controlling the balance of substances in the plant. The active ingredients of the product provide rapid germination of seeds, strengthen the culture immunity, resistance to a moist environment, which occurs as a result of heavy rainfall or flooding.
For the germination of the seeds of cucumbers prepare a solution of 100 ml of water and 1-2 drops of the drug. It is necessary to maintain them in a biostimulator for at least 18-20 hours at a temperature of 20-23 ° C, that is, the process is rather long.
